5 things to do in one day trip to Big Bend National Park

They say Big Bend is Texas’ gift to the nation. The Far West Texas where almost feels like heaven and earth meets. Here, at the end of the road, where you will see many birds and animals, one will be surprised how this land surrounded by weather-beaten desert have the beauty like this. This is magical big bend…

Welcome to the Big Bend!

One day is not enough to explore this vast land but you can surely enjoy and learn many things from this trip. We tired to cover mountains, desert and river as much as we could in a day. Sunscreen and water is your best-friend and you are ready to go.

Park allowed only day-pass and entry was free because of COVID-19 of course.

Can you feel the patience? Patiently waiting for next meal. Human beings can learn so much from Nature, it’s mind blowing.
It was eye pleasing
I am amazed to see varieties of birds thriving in the desert

1. Boquillas Canyon:

  • Level – easy
  • Distance – 1.4 miles around trip
  • Time – 1 hour

Begins with a short climb, then descends via a sandy path to the river. Ends near a huge sand dune.

Rio Grande River view
you will see many Mexican art crafts for sale around this area
This is the end of the road or a beginning…
you can play with your echo here, it’s fun

I present you the great river that serves as the USA and Mexico border. A beautiful thing I experienced here, there will be a man standing on the Mexico side of the river and he will start singing a beautiful Mexican songs for you. This was something different.
I didn’t expect to see any other plants than cactus but I am impressed and feel dumb.

2. Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive:

This is around 30 miles scenic drive which highlights the beautiful formations of mountain Big Bend is famous for. There are lots of scenic overlooks and exhibits along the way. But the temperature was almost 100F, I chose to stay in car and enjoy the drive.

3. Window View:

  • Level – easy
  • Distance – 0.3 mile
  • Time – 15 mins

Easiest walk to the great mountain views. This is the best stop for one day trip.

Window View, I would love to see sunrise or sunset from here but may be next time.
have to include myself in the view
isn’t this pretty!

4. Basin Loop:

  • Level – Moderate
  • Distance – 2 miles
  • Time – 1 hour

After Window view we decided to see the mountain more closer, so we chose the shortest trail around and started our hike in the Basin loop. I must say summer hike in the desert is not a play. Keeping yourself hydrated is the Key!

you will surely get the closer views of the mountains on the trail
pretty cactus flowers will make your trail easy
then we met our DEER friends
never seen deers this close in the wilderness

5. The Fossil Discovery Exhibit:

The Exhibit was awarded an Excellence in Exhibition award from the American Alliance of Museums. Built in 2017, these exhibits amaze visitors like it did to me.

I enjoy museums but I was not really excited thinking it will be like any other museums but I was wrong. I forget to get pictures coz I was enjoying a lot. These pictures are from my videos, please excuse them. The fossils they have found in this land and the discovery they have made is something I cannot explain.

Millions and millions years ago this desert land we are exploring today used to be covered with sea and giant sea creatures living here. Then they transferred into many beaches. Slowly dinosaurs called it home and many more incidents .

Isn’t this amazing to think one day human beings will be gone but this land or sea whatever it will transform into will be here. It will still be here to tell the history.

These are the 5 easy things you can cover in a day trip to Big Bend. Let the adventure begin!
